The Mexican Mint introduced the Gold Centenario in 1921 as a commemorative 50-peso piece to celebrate 100 years of independence. The design featured Winged Victory in front-facing relief on the obverse, with what was then considered the modern coat of arms for Mexico on the reverse.
In 1981, the Gold Libertad was introduced as a modern gold bullion coin for investors. When the Mexican Mint initially offered this series, it used the same designs from the Gold Centenario. Though those designs have been modernized at this point in the programs history, the spirit of the design is the same as that original Centenario issued 100 years ago.
Winged Victory appears on the obverse of 2020 1 oz Reverse Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coin. The designs focus on Winged Victory captures her figure in a three-quarter side profile with a wreath in one hand and broken chains in the other. This design was modernized on the Gold Libertad in 2000.
For the reverse design of 2020 Reverse Proof Gold Libertads, the modern coat of arms for Mexico is featured. As with all 1 oz or larger coins in this series, the reverse of this coin has the modern coat of arms at the center of the design field. In that design, a golden eagle devours a rattlesnake while perched on a cactus branch. The design element features 10 historic versions of the national coat of arms as well, with these historic seals arranged in a circle around the edge of the design field.
These 2020 1 oz Reverse Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coins are available with individual plastic capsules. The reverse proof release in this series debuted in 2018 and is now in its third year of availability. The reverse-proof coins have mirrored design finishes with frosted background fields.
